Healthy Living Initiative For The North
The North West Company (NWC) and the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Manitoba are partnering to promote and educate healthy living by distributing Heart & Stroke Healthy Life posters to communities in the North this winter season.
The posters, which feature healthy living advice including a quick overview of Canada's Food Guide, will be posted in Northern/NorthMart stores, community schools and hospitals. Using North West's multiple locations throughout Manitoba, including Giant Tiger stores, NWC is able to help the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Manitoba expand their reach to the North.
"We are very appreciative that The North West Company was interested in sponsoring the creation of our winter healthy living posters. Their partnership has allowed us to reach many northern locations where we would not otherwise have access," says Jackie Zalnasky, Vice President of Health Promotion and Research for the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Manitoba. "The posters will raise awareness of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle to help prevent heart disease and stroke at a time when nine out of 10 Canadians have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and 80% of early onset heart disease and stroke can be prevented."
To further help Heart and Stroke expand their reach, NWC asked First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, Health Canada to come on board and use the Healthy Life posters as educational tools.
"We are pleased that Manitoba's Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (ADI) workers can use this healthy living poster, developed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and The North West Company, as one of the tools in enhancing their diabetes programming in First Nation communities," said Lori Rudolph-Crawford, Team Leader Nutrition and Diabetes Wellness Unit, FNIHB, Health Canada.
The poster is another piece of NWC's ongoing Healthy Living initiative - launched in 2010, which encourages customers to make healthy food choices to improve overall health. The initiative has allowed NWC to partner with health-oriented organizations, such as the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Manitoba, for optimized health information.
