Cost-U-Less Helps to Raise Funds for Country Day School's Art Building
ST. CROIX - Country Day School appears to be making progress in its efforts to raise money to rebuild the school's art building that was destroyed during a fire last month.
A fundraiser, drawing more than 200 people, was held Saturday at Club Comanche to raise funds for the private schools rebuilding project. The April 2 fire destroyed the art building and all its contents, including all of the students' supplies and works of art.
Monica Marin, an art teacher at the school, said 35 local artists donated 43 pieces of art for the "I Love Art" fundraiser, which included a silent auction, salsa dancing with live music by Siete Son, and music by D.J. Dex.
Marin said donations included oil and acrylic paintings, pastels, photography, photography books and jewelry.
Country Day director of development Elena Hensley said 25 volunteers - including teachers, parents and students - helped run the event. All of the money raised will be used to rebuild the art center.
Hensley said the old art building was underinsured and the funds from the insurance cannot cover all of the costs to rebuild the center and replace everything that was lost in the fire.
Hensley said she was impressed by how the community turned out to help immediately after the fire. "We cannot believe how the community stepped up to help us," she said.
Marin said a lot of artists had also contacted her wanting to donate art for a fundraiser. "Pretty immediately artists from the community rallied to raise money to rebuild, so we wanted to organize an event and we thought a silent auction would be ideal," Marin said.
On June 11, Cafe Fresco owner Jill Dedinsky, a Country Day graduate and a parent of a student attending the school, will be hosting a wine tasting at her restaurant.
The school also plans to hold a raffle that will provide close to $40,000 in prizes. Only 600 tickets will be sold at $100 each. Caribbean Auto Group of St. Croix donated a 2011 Dodge Dakota Truck, valued at $34,000, for the raffle, and other prizes include hotel stays and gift certificates from local businesses.
