The North West Company Takes Flight
Congratulations to The North West Voyageurs for placing first in the Team Theme category during the 8th annual United Way Plane Pulling competition. The Plane Pull event kick started the United Way’s 2011 fundraising campaign. Team captain and 2011 Campaign Chair Edward Kennedy, along with hundreds of other volunteers and supporters, revealed the 2011 fundraising goal of $19,723,899.
"It's an ambitious goal," said Kennedy. "But like the plane pullers, with a great deal of determination and teamwork, we will make it to the finish line."
Getting back to our historical roots, the North West United Way Committee dressed in official voyageur costumes donated by The Festival Du Voyageur, topped with red toques and sashes. The North West Voyageur team led the competition for most of the morning, with a time of 7.19 seconds but was out-pulled at the last minute. The North West Voyageurs officially placed fourth out of 27 teams.
In 2010, The North West Company contributed $281,765 towards United Way’s community fund though various activities. This allows us to invest in 96 Agency Partners including Elwick Village and Gilbert Park – two Manitoba Housing Complexes where our staff volunteers helped build urban community gardens.
