Northern Little Grand Rapids is helping empower children, one snack at a time
Northern Little Grand Rapids is pleased to partner with the Start2Finish Running & Reading Club program at Abbalak Thunderswift Memorial School in Little Grand Rapids to provide a healthy snack for their weekly after-school program.
This program is offered to children in grades 1-5 and runs for two hours, one afternoon a week, from October-June, with a goal to improve literacy and physical fitness.
The afternoon kicks off with physical activity, which can include circuit training, running-based games and relays. After the activities, the students take part in discussions about inspirational words and stories while enjoying a nutritious snack. The day caps off with guided reading time, which means they can read on their own, with another student or with a volunteer.
Each child keeps track of their progress in physical fitness and reading through a journal. Just before the children are dismissed for the day, their coaches acknowledge those who have demonstrated great effort and attitudes. In the spring each child is also presented with a brand new pair of running shoes which is put to good use in May at the 5km Running & Reading Challenge.
Northern believes in building skills and confidence in young people while encouraging healthy living through education and physical activity programs like Start2Finnish.
