Fort Severn, ON will be training community members as solar technicians, thanks to a $6,100 grant from Northern and the Greener Tomorrow program.

The funds will help teach members of the community to install solar panels on local buildings including a solar farm within the community. These technicians will also be taught how to properly maintain the systems once installed.

The Greener Tomorrow program is not only nudging Fort Severn one step closer to achieving sustainability by using solar energy, it has also helped eliminate thousands of plastic bags from the landfill. The program was designed to reduce the plastic waste in communities while supporting local initiatives. Customers are charged a fee for plastic bags, then all funds collected throughout the year are reinvested back into the community.

“It was wonderful to present a donation that was going to be invested in the community’s needs,” said Ian Wray, Store Manager. “It will provide the community of Fort Severn with benefits for many years.”
