Apply for Funding

The Healthy Horizons Foundation is a non-profit organization, registered as a charity dedicated to the health and well-being of youth in the communities served by The North West Company. The Healthy Horizons Foundation provides grants to community-based youth programs focused on physical activity, nutrition, education and well-being.

Eligible Recipients

To be eligible for a Healthy Horizons Foundation grant, you must be:

  • Aligned to the mission and vision of the Health Horizons Foundation, with programming that focuses on making a positive and healthy impact on youth in your community, and
  • A registered charity in Canada or a registered “qualified donee,” as defined in the Income Tax Act (Canada). Details on becoming a qualified donee are given below.

Grant Criteria

For a successful grant application, please consider the following additional criteria:

  • Clearly indicate that your program aligns with one of the following priority funding categories: Physical Activity, Education, Nutrition, and Well-being.
  • Include a detailed list of Indigenous communities impacted by your program
  • If you received funding in the past, please ensure your final grant report and photos have been submitted, or submit it as soon as possible to remain eligible.
  • Demonstrate how the program enhances the community’s capacity and also has the ability to provide ongoing programing in the long term. E.g. equipment investments, facility improvements, or the development of skills and knowledge.
  • Explain how your program introduces new projects or enhances existing ones to promote healthy lifestyles and support the long-term well-being of children and youth.
  • Include any collaborative efforts with community leadership. A Letter of Support from community partners is encouraged.
  • Provide a list of other funding sources including provincial or federal organizations or outline if your program faces funding limitations.
  • If your program faces funding limitations, including ineligibility for federal or provincial funding, please outline these in your application.
  • Include a clear and detailed budget demonstrating how funds will be used, and that identifies all eligible items requiring funding.
  • Avoid items that are ineligible for funding (except in special circumstances): general and administrative costs; individual requests for personal donations or financial assistance (including elite sport or cultural competitions); travel, accommodation, meal expenses, and field trips; programs, events, or activities outside of Canada; endowment campaigns; advertising or fundraising initiatives; salaries for staff or individuals; and intermediary funding agencies.

Grant applications are evaluated by the Healthy Horizons Foundation Board of Directors twice a year. Under special circumstances, proposals will be accepted outside of the specified deadlines.
