The community of Portage La Loche, SK, recently came together to show their appreciation for community member Milton Herman, to thank him for all he does for them.

Known simply and lovingly as “Milton” by the community members, Herman is a self-volunteered individual who has been working at the community cemetery for almost 26 years now, maintaining the space for all.

Herman has always taken great pride in his work and has worked tirelessly on his own to keep the area free of any debris and other obstructions.

Georgina Janvier, who lives across the street from the cemetery, often sees Herman tending to the yard. She and her husband wanted to show him some appreciation for the fantastic work that he does, and started a community fundraiser.

The local Northern store and its staff were greatly moved by Herman’s story, and donated some steel-toed work boots and other gardening tools to help Herman with his commitment.

Leonard Montgrand, Métis Leader of the community’s Friendship Centre, also donated a brand new weed-eater on their behalf. The Friendship Centre is a safe place that donates time, classes and teachings to the Métis community.

Several other residents also contributed, donating various equipment including a wheelbarrow, shovels, a rake and disposable garbage bags, as well as some money for Herman’s welfare.

Herman was overjoyed with gratitude for being recognized, and thanked all the fundraisers for their gracious donations. Staying true to his spirits, Herman immediately went back to work upon receiving the new tools.

“Thank you to the residents of La Loche for coming together during this difficult time to show gratitude and appreciation for Milton Herman and his dedication. There is not enough of a thank you in the world to show how truly grateful we are for his efforts,” shared Portage La Loche store Manager, Jana Wilson. “Through this small generosity, we were able to show our thanks to Milton so he can carry on maintaining the cemetery for our loved ones who have passed.”
