Our Community Promise 

The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Cartwright, NL, are a testament to our commitment.   

Cartwright was established as a settled community in 1775 and incorporated as a town in 1956. This isolated community, with a population of 427 (per 2016 Census, Statistics Canada) is located on the eastern side of the entrance of Sandwich Bay, along the southeast coast in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The town can be accessed by road from Central and Western Labrador through the Trans-Labrador Highway, Route 156, by ship through a seasonal coastal ferry service and by plane.

1. Employment: We are one of the most prominent employers in Cartwright, with our Northern store employing 11 individuals. Our commitment to local talent is demonstrated through our workforce consisting of 73% Indigenous employees.*  

2. Capital Investment: Northern has made a $550,928 capital investment in the Cartwright store over a 10-year period.*

3. Annual Economic Impact: Northern is making a positive impact in Cartwright, with $441,853 annual economic impact in the community.*

“All store team members are very proud to contribute to the development of the community, for us it’s so important to support different committee's as much as possible. Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve worked in collaboration with several organizations to carry out many food security initiatives, especially supporting those who need it most. We’re proud to be part of the community,” said McCrone.
