Our Community Promise

The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Shamattawa First Nation, MB are a testament to our commitment.   

Shamattawa First Nation is a remote community in northern Manitoba, located on the banks of the Gods River where the Echoing River joins as a right tributary.

Shamattawa has a population of 1,019 residents (per 2016 Census, Statistics Canada) and is about 744 km away from Winnipeg, accessible by plane via the Shamattawa Airport and by winter road during the winter.

1. Employment: We are one of the most prominent employers in Shamattawa, with our Northern store employing 21 individuals. Our commitment to local talent is demonstrated through our workforce consisting of 76% Indigenous employees.*  

2. Capital Investment: Northern has made a $3,264,055 capital investment in Shamattawa store over a 10-year period.*

3. Annual Economic Impact: Northern is making a positive impact in Shamattawa, with $1,321,522 annual economic impact in the community.*

“I really appreciate the welcoming atmosphere by Chief and Council and the community of Shamattawa as a whole. During the COVID-19 outbreak our entire team banded together not only to deliver food hampers but to ensure the community had access to food – no small feat in the middle of a crisis. It really goes to show that when we all work together, we all win,” shared Dicht.
