Our Community Promise

The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Tulita, NT, are a testament to our commitment.

Formerly known as Fort Norman, Tulita is a Hamlet in the Sahtu Region of the Northwest Territories. The community is located at the junction of the Great Bear River and the Mackenzie River and was incorporated as a Hamlet in 1984. In 1996 the community took back its traditional name, which means “where the waters meet” in the Dene language – and reflects the community’s location.

Tulita is home to 478 residents (as per the Hamlet’s website) and is composed of Dene, Métis and non-Indigenous people who speak North Slavey and English.

The community is accessible via air all year round with Norman Wells as the regional centre and site of origin of the majority of flights. There are two options to get to the community by winter roads; one road links Tulita to Wringley, which connects with NWT Highway 1 to Fort Simpson and the second option is to travel along the winter road to access Norman Wells.
