Residents of three eastern Cree Nations were happy to finally gather for their annual Eastern Sector Fishing Derby.

Cumberland House hosted this year’s fishing derby during the weekend of September 25, where community members from Shoal Lake Cree Nation, Red Earth Cree Nation and Cumberland House Cree Nation enjoyed a fun, relaxing day. People from other communities from Manitoba and Alberta also joined the event.

The fishing derby was organized for two fishing categories: Walleye fish and Pike fish; the individual who caught the heaviest fish was the winner of that category. The lucky winner of the Pike fish category was Dolvin Carrier who managed to catch a 7 lb. fish and won an ATV Outlander as a prize – donated by the Cumberland House Northern Store.

Northern Store manager Gerald Favel was happy to support the event and said, “It was a successful event! Everyone had fun and all participants were very excited about the prizes.”
