This past week, Nor’Westers came together for a week of learning, deep reflection and honest conversations about the experiences and legacy of the residential school system. The week opened with a soulful drum and prayer from Lyn Blackburde, Director of Education, Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs followed by powerful words from Wally McKay, former Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief and Residential School Survivor who encouraged us to honour Survivors through reflection and raising awareness.
Through interactive daily lunch and learn online sessions, Nor’Westers learned about lived experiences of survivors including their children and families, explored the ongoing impacts of colonialism and discussed the responsibilities we carry in reconciliation.
On September 24, a sea of orange filled our spaces as Nor’Westers wore their shirts in remembrance and solidarity and listened to an inspiring message from Stephanie Scott, Executive Director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR), who reminded us that reconciliation is lifelong work. All proceeds from our orange apparel sales will directly support the NCTR.

As the largest provider of goods and services to Indigenous communities in northern Canada, this week was a strong reminder of Our Promise to Indigenous Peoples; our reaffirmed commitment to building more collaborative relationships that will enhance the inclusion and social well-being of Indigenous People of Canada in the spirit of reconciliation reflected in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and final report.
