The Mamohitowin (gathering) brought together communities across the James Bay coast, with around 130 traditional teepees set up on the open grounds of the Old Post settlement. Beyond a celebration of community, culture, and connection to the land, this year, the event honoured the James Bay Treaty 9 signed in 1905, recognizing and protecting Indigenous sovereignty while sharing the land with settlers.

The event united members of Kashechewan First Nation and Fort Albany First Nation, whose roots are traced back to the historic site of Old Fort Albany in the late 1800s. Once home to the second Hudson’s Bay Company trading post, the community was later divided in 1950 as part of Treaty 9 into what is now known as modern Fort Albany and Kashechewan.

At the event, Elders shared impactful messages delivered in Cree language, reflecting their lived experiences and inspiring the continuity of cultural teachings. A vibrant powwow, youth-focused activities, bingo games, and a raffle draw also added to the spirit of community and joy.

“It was a pleasure to share this beautiful experience with our customers,” said a Northern store team member in attendance. “We were fortunate to learn from an Elder about traditional fish cutting and cooking.” Team members were later invited into an Elder’s tent, where they were welcomed with a warm cup of tea and kind hospitality.

The North West Company is proud to support community-led initiatives that foster togetherness, cultural connection, and intergenerational learning across the communities we serve.
