Each year on October 18, communities across the state celebrate Alaska Day, commemorating the official transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States. As the historic hub where the 1867 ceremony took place 158 years ago, Sitka hosted a variety of programs, which AC’s Lakeside store was happy to support through community engagement, volunteer efforts, and meaningful donations.

From October 12 to 18, Sitkans had the opportunity to take part in week-long community events, including the largest parade of the year, the Alaska Day Ball with Victorian-era costumes, marching units, musical performances, historical re-enactments, and several family-friendly activities. These celebrations offered meaningful opportunities for residents of all ages to come together, connect with the past, and keep cultural traditions alive.

This year, AC Lakeside participated in the parade, joining the festive spirit by handing out candies to the youth along the route. The team also designed and donated historical Alaska Commercial Company memorabilia, showcasing life in remote Alaska for an exhibit at the Harrigan Centennial Hall, helping visitors reflect on the 1867 era.

The store also supported festival organizers by hosting sales of Alaska Day buttons and raffle tickets, with proceeds contributing to next year’s events and looks forward to continuing its support for this long-standing community tradition.
