Youth from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (Nelson House), MB, attended the 2024 Career Trek Career Education Summer Camp, made possible through a Healthy Horizons Foundation (HHF) grant.
Thanks to HHF’s $14,000 grant, students aged 10 to 12 from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation were able to participate in the two-week summer camp—making this experience accessible to many families. Participants explored over 20 different careers in fields such as science, entrepreneurship, technology, manufacturing, social services, film and entertainment, engineering, and culinary arts. Through scenario-based learning, students reflected on their goals and discovered valuable resources to help them pursue their chosen career paths.

Campers also went on a road trip to Skills Shop North (SSN), a learning hub in Thompson, MB, that promotes trades, innovation, fabrication, and entrepreneurship in the North. Guided by SSN staff, they built and programmed LEGO robots, experimented with digital designs, and created custom stickers to take home—enhancing readiness for post-secondary studies or the workforce by developing essential skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

When children and youth are given opportunities to learn, explore, and experience hands-on education, it opens doors to endless possibilities—sparking curiosity and contagious excitement about the future. With early exposure to diverse career paths, we can inspire young campers to pursue higher education, helping reduce systemic barriers and strengthen their communities.
The Healthy Horizons Foundation, established by The North West Company, is proud to empower youth in northern and Indigenous communities to build strong, healthy lifestyles through grants that support community-led programs focused on Health & Well-being, Culture & Education, and Nutrition & Food Security.
