With support from the Healthy Horizons Foundation (HHF), 11 Inuit youth from six communities participated in the Ayalik Expeditions program, delivered in partnership with YMCA Camp Wanakita in Haliburton, Ontario, during the summer of 2024.

Thanks to a $5,000 grant from HHF, additional private donations, and support from Camp Wanakita alumni, this new program offered two unique opportunities: a two-week summer camp session for 14-year-olds and a 12-day canoe trip in Kipawa, Quebec, for 16- and 17-year-olds, who also earned their Paddle Canada certification. Through these experiences, participants strengthened their leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while forming lasting connections with their peers.
With our grant support, the program empowers Inuit youth who may otherwise not have such opportunities to build self-esteem and confidence through challenging outdoor adventures, meeting other young Canadians, and exploring social and cultural connections. By supporting these youth-focused, transformative experiences, we strive to create positive ripples across families, friends, and communities—supporting a bright future for youth in Nunavut.
The Healthy Horizons Foundation, established by The North West Company, is proud to empower youth in northern and Indigenous communities to build strong, healthy lifestyles through grants that support community-led programs focused on Health & Well-being, Culture & Education, and Nutrition & Food Security.
