Rooted in Land: Prioritizing Wellness and Cultural Connection

Jan. 19, 2026

In 2024, the Healthy Horizons Foundation (HHF) provided a $5,000 grant to the Northern Village of Beauval, Saskatchewan, in support of the Youth Outdoor Nature Summer Camp. The initiative brought Métis and First Nations youth aged 18 and over together for land-based physical activities that supported wellness, cultural connection, and personal development.

From September 13 to 15, the camp was held at La Plonge Dam, located within Treaty 10 traditional territory. A total of 45 Beauval youth participated alongside Elders and Knowledge Keepers in activities such as canoeing, wilderness walks, rat root scouting and harvesting, fishing, berry picking, and camping. These shared experiences provided meaningful opportunities for youth to prioritize their mental and emotional well-being through positive social interactions, deeper connections to the land, and an appreciation for healthy, active lifestyle choices.

Aligned with HHF’s mission, the gathering demonstrated the positive impact of community-led, youth-focused programming in fostering intergenerational outdoor learning, cultural pride, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

The Healthy Horizons Foundation, established by The North West Company, is proud to empower youth in northern and Indigenous communities to build strong, healthy lifestyles through grants that support community-led programs focused on Health & Well-being, Culture & Education, and Nutrition & Food Security.
