On July 1, the Northern store in Moose Factory, Ontario, proudly supported a locally organized gathering that brought together residents and visitors from nearby Moosonee for a summer celebration of connection, culture, and community.

Organized by a local resident, Leona Chilton, the “Day in the Sun” or “Kanata Day” welcomed more than 500 participants to the Ministik school grounds.

“We always had a gathering during this day,” said Chilton. “It’s a core memory for so many residents and a chance to gather together for a fun day under the sun.”

According to Chilton, the event helped revive a tradition that has brought Moose Cree Nation residents, local workers, and visitors together for more than 50 years, supporting social, cultural, and emotional well-being of community members.

Supported by local businesses and partners, the celebrations featured games, activities, and cultural competitions for all ages. The Northern team was among the first contributors, donating $1,200 in food and door prizes to help make the event possible.

At North West, we are proud to support locally led initiatives that bring people together, celebrate cultural connections, and strengthen the well-being of communities we proudly serve.
