After its successful return in 2024, this July, the Eeyou Istchee Summer Games, a week-long celebration of Cree Nation youth through sport and cultural exchange, was hosted by the Cree Nation of Chisasibi, Quebec, supported by the Northern store through a $10,000 sponsorship.

Organized by the Eeyou Istchee Sports and Recreation Association, the Olympic-style games bring together youth from Cree communities across Eeyou Istchee (meaning ‘The People’s Land’ in Cree) through tournaments, shared meals, and cultural workshops. From July 20 to 25, close to 600 young athletes participated in various sports including softball fastpitch, pickle ball, basketball, canoeing, swimming, and traditional Cree games.

The store staff was pleased to support the summer games alongside other community partners, helping ensure youth from the participating communities had the opportunity to connect with Cree values, traditions, and culture while engaging in friendly competitions.

“It was inspiring to see our young people challenge themselves, support one another, and proudly represent their home communities,” shared Cree Nation Youth Council’s Deputy Youth Grand Chief Vice Chairperson, Darius Neacappo Pelchat.

“These games created memories that our young athletes will carry with them for years to come, reminding them that they belong, that they are supported, and that they are capable of achieving great things, and reminding us that when we invest in our youth, we are investing in the future of Eeyou Istchee," Darius added.

The North West Company is proud to support community-led events that create meaningful opportunities for young people who represent the future of the communities we serve.
