Sep. 17, 2026

In 2024, the Healthy Horizons Foundation supported the Municipality of Pond Inlet’s after-school cooking class program with a $20,000 grant, creating opportunities for Nunavummiut youth to learn practical, culturally rooted cooking skills while giving back to their community.

Through the program, students developed foundational skills in food safety, meal planning, and nutrition. The meals they prepared were delivered to approximately 50 individuals and families, ensuring community members in need had access to healthy food.

The structured cooking classes provided a space for Elders to share traditional recipes, cooking techniques, and cultural teachings, helping youth sharpen their culinary skills while strengthening their connection to Inuit heritage.

“I really enjoy the youth cooking program because it teaches me more than just recipes. I’m learning teamwork, planning, and even a little bit about healthy eating,” shared a 15-year-old participant. “I loved dancing to the music when we were cooking.”

"I love cooking with my friends! We made lasagna and cupcakes. I learned how to mix things without spilling everywhere. It’s really fun!” shared a seven-year-old participant.

Healthy Horizons is proud to support community-led programs that empower youth to build practical life skills, strengthen cultural pride, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
