From Sept. 21 to 26, the AC store in Dillingham, Alaska, welcomed 50 students as part of a local after-school program, giving them an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how their local Alaska Commercial Company store serves the community.

During the tour, students learned about the various retail operations, processes, and activities involved in serving remote communities. Store Manager Bob Vail introduced them to the importance of safe food handling, organizing displays, and engaging with customers, and even gave them the opportunity to scan items at the checkout. Students got to see a forklift in action and observe how the staff work together as a team to prepare fresh produce and cut meats with care, for families in Dillingham.
The AC team also provided refreshments for the students and encouraged them to continue learning and exploring through field trips like these, which provide them with valuable real-world experiences.
“The team was excited to welcome the students to the store and share the effort and attention that goes into serving the community,” shared Store Manager Vail. “It was refreshing to see their curiosity as they explored different areas of the store. We hope the tour gave them a glimpse into the world of retail and inspired them to consider future opportunities in the industry as they grow up.”
