Every year on June 21, Canadians celebrate the National Indigenous Peoples Day – an official day to recognize and celebrate the heritage, cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

The National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on the day of the summer solstice, which holds important symbolism for the Indigenous people. Throughout history, celebrations of culture and heritage have been held near this date.

For many years, The North West Company Inc. has been an active supporter of Indigenous communities across Canada. Over the past years, North West has taken part in National Indigenous People Day celebrations and supports Indigenous Day Live, an annual event held by APTN in Winnipeg, MB. Through our Northern and NorthMart stores, we have also been able to support and be part of celebrations in the communities where we serve.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, some communities have cancelled their celebrations, others are planning celebrations based on gathering restrictions such as fishing derbies or holding online events, and some are planning an event later in the summer. Even though this year’s celebration will be different, we will continue to provide support to National Indigenous Peoples Day.
