This October, Northern Fort Liard in the Northwest Territories proudly supported a community-led fundraising initiative organized by the local fire department. The team quickly responded to the department’s campaign to collect recyclables in order to raise funds for new uniforms, safety equipment, and gear.
Northern Fort Liard has maintained an in-store recycling program for several years, where containers from staff purchases and other store recyclables are collected and donated to support elders, local groups, and community initiatives. As part of the fundraiser, the store gathered several large bags of bottles and cans, which were delivered directly to the fire department.

Store Manager Greg Wilson and Grocery Manager Harman Hundal, who is also a volunteer with the department, worked alongside other members in sorting and rebagging all collected recyclables before delivering them to the local bottle depot. “Whenever the fire department reaches out, we don’t hesitate, we always want to help. We’re proud to contribute to initiatives that bring our community together and strengthen Fort Liard,” shared Store Manager Wilson.

Thanks to the collected recyclables and generous contributions from community partners, the initiative raised a total of $1040. To recognize the members who helped coordinate these efforts, Northern also sponsored a $50 gift card, awarded to Stevenson Klondike for coming closest to guessing the final fundraising total.
The North West Company is proud to support community-driven efforts that strengthen and make a positive, meaningful difference in the communities we serve.
