Honoring Tradition Through Entrepreneurial Innovation
Founded in 2018 by Ian Gladue of Wabasca First Nation, Alberta, Mitsoh — meaning "to eat" in Cree — holds deep Indigenous roots and a mission to share authentic Indigenous foods with the modern market. Ian's entrepreneurial journey began in 2013 with a food cart, later evolving into a food truck business and restaurant, Native Delights. Inspired by his mother's time-honored meat and pemmican-making traditions, and using recipes and techniques passed down through generations, Ian brought Mitsoh to life.
Mitsoh’s products modernize a traditional First Nations superfood, using natural ingredients, including real bison and prairie-sourced berries, and Indigenous-inspired packaging, to offer vibrant flavour varieties to customers.
In 2025, North West's Category Manager Sophie Joyal met with Ian, co-CEO Brandon Markiw, and Director of Sales and Marketing, Emily Gracie. During National Indigenous History Month, Mitsoh products were introduced to select Northern stores, and have since gained a growing customer base. The merchandising team works closely with Mitsoh's founders to ensure customer-favorite flavors are consistently available on store shelves.
"From the initial meeting, I instantly knew I wanted to work with Mitsoh's incredible team and showcase their products in our stores," said Category Manager Joyal. "Their mission is inspiring, and I am proud to help share that across the communities we serve."
It is partnerships like this one that reflect The North West Company's ongoing commitment to fostering Indigenous inclusion in stores and supporting economic development, as outlined in Our Promise to Indigenous Peoples.
