Healthy food choices continue to become more affordable and accessible for Northern store shoppers in Attawapiskat, ON, thanks to The North West Company and Nutrition North Canada (NNC).

North West is proud to advocate for programs such as NNC. Across Canada, 85 of the Northern and North Mart stores North West operates offer NNC subsidies, making North West one of the largest participants in the program.

The NNC program changes announced recently will result in an additional $1 per kilogram subsidy on certain non-perishable products transported by Winter Road. 

NNC communities seen prices reduce by 4.72% thanks to the subsidy*. Nutrition North’s impact is illustrated by the price of a 4L jug of milk in Attawapiskat, which thanks to the NNC subsidy, only costs $4.89 as compared to $15.09 without the subsidy”.**

While NNC has been successful, there is room for improvement to the program. We have recommended that subsidy levels continue to adjust to reflect inflation. We are always looking for ways to drive down costs and pass along the savings to our customers.
