The banquet hosted by undergraduate students demonstrates the next generation’s commitment to reconciliation and Indigenous economic growth.

On March 5, business partners and students had the chance to connect through a thought-provoking event that invited Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike to have an open and honest conversation about a timely topic – reconciliation.

The Future of Indigenous Business Banquet (FIBB) 2020 is a networking event presented by the University of Manitoba Indigenous Commerce Students (UMICS), and held on Treaty 1 Territory, the land belonging to Indigenous communities. This all-inclusive event incorporates traditional and modern elements such as an opening prayer by Grandfather in Residence Wanbdi Wakita, along with a panel discussion and banquet dinner.

In the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect, approximately 80 students from various institutions engaged with prospective employers to learn more about different corporate strategies regarding diversity and equity, as well as share their own ideas.

The North West Company was happy to contribute to the banquet’s success with a Lead Sponsorship.

“Having partnerships with the business community is critical to making FIBB happen. The North West Company has been involved with this event in a major capacity for several years, and the support does not go unnoticed by our membership,” said UMICS President Kristi Perrin.

“Beyond financial support, having business employers and successful individuals come out to network with students is very meaningful and encouraging to us. Indigenous business students are motivated to connect with potential employers and bring our unique skillsets into the local business community.”
