Our Community Promise

The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Lac Brochet, MB, are a testament to our commitment.   

Lac Brochet village is the administrative centre of the Northlands Denesuline First Nation. Located on the north shore of Lac Brochet, west of Churchill near the Saskatchewan border, it is the most northern First Nations community in Manitoba.

The village of Lac Brochet – or Dahlu T’ua, which means “Jackfish Lake” – has a population of 728 (per 2016 Census, Statistics Canada), and Dene is the official language of choice since 2011.

The reserve is an isolated fly-in community surrounded by pristine wilderness, accessible by plane using the nearby Lac Brochet Airport and by winter road accessible to Thompson from late January to March.

1. Employment: We are one of the most prominent employers in Lac Brochet, with our Northern store employing 18 individuals. Our commitment to local talent is demonstrated through our workforce consisting of 78% Indigenous employees.*  

2. Capital Investment: Northern has made a $1,230,382 capital investment in the Lac Brochet store over a 10-year period.*

3. Annual Economic Impact: Northern is making a positive impact in Lac Brochet, with $928,274 annual economic impact in the community.*

Our Northern Store Manager, Byron Higgins and his team are dedicated community supporters.

“We are glad to be part of a community with deep family and cultural roots. The Elders act as advisors to the Chief and Council,” Higgins shared. “During the summer, cultural events and camps are common most weekends and are held for all members of the community. The leadership work hard in instilling Dene tradition and values and medicine to the youth of all ages.”
