Our Community Promise

The North West Company Inc. is proud of the active role we play within the communities we serve, striving to make a positive, progressive difference. Our contributions within the community of Lynn Lake, MB, are a testament to our commitment.

In the 1920s, Lynn Lake was known as the town of Sherridon, established by Sherrit Gordon Mines Ltd. as a copper mining community. By 1945-1950, the town’s copper deposits had begun to run dry, prompting the community to start looking for other economic opportunities and leading to the town’s literal relocation.

Lynn Lake itself is named after Lynn Smith, the chief engineer who designed the plan to physically bring the town of Sherridon 193 km up north to its present location. Thanks to Smith, the community was able to bring the vital infrastructure it needed to stand strong today as a mining powerhouse with a thriving ecotourism scene.

Lynn Lake’s population of just under 500 residents (according to Statistics Canada’s 2016 Census) primarily consist of citizens of Marcel Colomb First Nation, making the predominant languages spoken in the region Cree and English. Lynn Lake is accessible by air, though flights are currently limited to Medicavs and freight. Alternatively, visitors can visit year-round through Hwy 391.
